Park City was founded in 1872 by Mormon polygamist George Snyder and his third wife Rhoda, when they built a boarding house to support the recently established silver mining trade. Area mines produced several millionaires over the years, and brought prospecting immigrants and adventurers to the area. Skiing was introduced by local Scandinavian miners in the late 1920’s, and later saved the town from ruin after the Great Depression and World War II.
In response to a decline in the silver mining industry, several miners gathered and rallied investing support to build the area’s first ski resort, Treasure Mountain, in 1963. The ski and tourist industry has since become the economic mainstay for the area. With a local average population of about 8000, Park City is now a premier destination for multitudes of travelers that hail from around the globe.
Main Street takes you back in time with Victorian era storefronts, including the Park City Museum, where visitors can explore the area’s rich and colorful history. Hundreds of miles of mine tunnels still exist under the ski slopes, and remnants of a once booming industry still remain around town. Park City is a great place to experience the genuine feel of a western frontier town that also has a unique, vibrant and contemporary atmosphere.
Park City is now home to the US Olympic Ski and Snowboarding Team, the annual World Cup, and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games were hosted here. Since 1981, the Sundance Film Festival draws independent filmmakers and celebrities to the area, and Park City has become known for its artistic, adventurous, and maverick character.
